Garden Bloggers Bloom Day March 2010

My second Garden Bloggers Bloom Day is an exciting one, only to become more and more exciting as the spring and summer unfold.  After a long winter and cold-nipped plants, we've experienced a few days of rain and warm temperatures.  The plants are happily sending out blooms to greet the world with cheerful color and perfume.  This is what's blooming in my garden right now...

The many colors of Vinca...

The brilliant, ever tropical Hibiscus, El Capitolio or "Poodle Flower" (some Hibiscus are still recouperating, depending on their microclimate location)

The peach colored dwarf Canna Lily

First Blueberry harvest (two berries are ripe and yummy thus far)

Citrus is in full bloom (navel orange, Ponderosa lemon, and Meyer Lemon)

Pentas are a year-round companion

Crown of Thorns

Star Jasmine and Carolina Jasmine is fragrant and colorful!

Don't know what this "inherited" plant is but it has lovely blooms (Mother of 1000's)

Lantana of every color...newest addition is the yellow/red variation.  Gold Mound, purple and white also adorn my gardens.

Honeysuckle vine

Oxalis Charmed Wine Shamrock

Kalanchoe offers cheerful blooms

The ever-faithful Blanket Flower is in full bloom

As is the Mexican Petunia (Ruellia)

Nemesia

And Snap Dragon

While we wait for the rest of the garden, there's certainly much to be thankful for!

Kimberly: Beautiful pictures! You have lots of bloomings in your garden, all are very lovely. Especially love the snapdragon, the hibiscus and the carolina jasmine.

Congratulations on your second bloom day, Kimberly! (and I'm glad you got your comments sorted out, even though I dislike dealing with these embedded forms that make me refresh three times.) You've got one of my favourite plants, lantana, which is a perennial for you but only an annual for us here in NS, and I can't wait to have it growing again!

Oh my goodness....so much beauty and color in your garden. I love Vinca and it is a summertime favorite where I live.

Wonderful, colorful blooms. I have white and pink vincas. They are so easy to grow all by themselves.

Dear Kimberly, This is a truly magnificent sequence of images. I can hardly believe that you have so much, and of such varied interest, in flower already. The Jasmine flower nestling against those dark green leaves I thought to be particularly appealing. Is it very scented?

You have such lovely flowers. I'd like to have that pastel purple vinca. I am featuring your blog this week at my sidebar.

You are a few weeks ahead of us in the Tampa area. My grapefruit tree still hasn't flowered. It's at least 3 weeks later than normal.

Your pictures are lovely.

Kimberly - it's so encouraging to see flowering plants, something to aspire to here in IL! I fell in love with Oxalis a number of years ago, and actually bought one last summer. It has happily wintered in our family room, along with a Meyer Lemon and Hibicus. (They love the sky lights & clearstory windows) Thanks for the ray of sunshine!! -Shyrlene :)

Beautiful flowers Kimberly! Although I did gasp slightly at picture #2, your purple Vinca minor. One of my post drafts at the moment is about Vinca minor as an invasive out-of-control pest on this property! All the others are stunning though, and I'm a bit jealous. Still most daffodils blooming here.

Color color color! Vinca major is invasive where I live - I always shudder involuntarily when I see vinca!

You have a lot of promise blooming in your garden. My pentas were killed to the ground as were my Mexican petunias. You're ahead of us here in zone 9, but we'll get there.

I think my comment just got swallowed by the angry internet gods. It was lovely to see everything blooming like mad in your garden, Kimberly. I'm especially jealous of your honeysuckle. Do give it a sniff and a kiss for me; okay?

Ooh, what a teaser you are! So many lovely cheerful blooms!

What a wonderful selection of flowers of all colors. I can't choose, all your photos are perfect and I should like to take home all your flowers. As this is not possible, I count on you Saturday (Friday) at Macro Flowers Saturday.

Good morning! It must be so awesome to have so much in bloom. Those blueberry blooms sure do look delicious. Nothing better than fresh blueberries and flowers.

Hello Kimberly

Following your comment about Arum Maculatum - I'm wondering whether you know about my other blog, LOOSE AND LEAFY, where I will be following this plant as it develops through the season.

Your garden flowers are quite abundant and colorful for a March day! We are still suffering the effects of winter here, with so many damaged tropicals. Even my ruellia and pentas are not in bloom! : ( My sister has that Carolina jasmine covering her front porch right in yellow right now. So lovely!

Just look at your blooms..love the vinca!!!

I'm jealous. There, I said it. I want to have that many blooming flowers in my garden.

A far cry from Chicago in March Kimberly, where many of your plants would only survive winter indoors. Congrats on your second bloom day!

Kimberly girl I had no idea Vinca came in so many colours ! Wow : )
All the fragrances you have in your garden is another amazing option for living where you do .. and colours .. so many different colours and textures of the plants.
I think I would be overwhelmed to tell you the truth .. so much going on and so gorgeous .. I have to take it all in baby steps or I would continue to run around in circles yipping away with no idea what do do first ? LOL
Gorgeous : )
Joy
PS .. I have "Amber Wheels" Blanket Flower and it is so pretty .. they are a great perennial to have : )

Kimberly this is an incredible bloom for March - its like being in my garden in the summer. Most of what you have growing here can't be grown outside. I really liked your hibiscus - I've never seen one with such lovely petals that divide like that. Very unusual for me. That 2nd vinca gets chopped back constantly in my garden.

Hi Kimberly, thank you for following. You have a very exciting post with beautiful tropical's. I read that you are more or less new to tropical gardening. Is it not exciting to find all these gorgeous new plants and naturally it is also challenging in a beautiful way. I made my experiences about 35 years ago I was like a kid in a toyshop! Anyway it is nice to meet a new gardener with a passion for plants.
I do love the Vincas as they are so pretty and so tough, do seed themselves and are a great plant to have in the garden. I see you also grow citrus fruit which is great to have in the garden. I am a fan of Cannas, they are so bold and elegant flowers. Happy gardening T.

The pictures that you take are incredible. You are so licky with the climate you have in Florida. Today is the first day of sun we have had in England for week.

Thankyou, everyone for your kind comments!

Curbstone Valley Farm and Country Mouse, I know that many consider vinca an invasive weed. I've also been told the same of my lantana. I do understand it can get out of control if allowed to do so.

Jodi, thank you for informing me of my annoying comments section...I will look into that. I don't like having to refresh either.

Carol, I purchased the Charmed Wine last year. I wasn't sure how it would do, but it's obviously performing well. I love the color of it!

Edith, I look forward to my Yellow Carolina Jasmine every year as it only blooms December through March/April. Once the weather warms, the flowers sleep until next year. It smells heavenly, too!

Autumn Belle, thank you so much for the honor of featuring my blog in your sidebar!

Shyrlene, moving to FL from IL, I'm impressed with your tropicals! I had a hibiscus as a houseplant but my house was a bit drafty for it. It was never happy.

NanaK and Floridagirl, it sounds like you got hit much harder than I did. I'm zone 9b, just north of zone 10. My pentas and ruellia never quit blooming this year.

Maia, I'm looking forward to participating in your macro saturday meme! It'll be fun!

Lucy, I will definitely follow your Loose and Leaf. The Jack in the Pulpit intrigues me!

Again, thank you so much, everyone, for your lovely, kind comments! It makes my day to read them!! :)

You've got soooo many flowers blooming in your yard. I love those new vincas. The colors are great and they can really take the summer heat.

Kimberly said...

Susan, you're right. When I planted them originally last summer, I thought them seasonal fillers. But they were some of the few that took the cold pretty well, and one of the first to bounce back. That's good in my book!

When I see beautiful posts like this, with all sorts of things blooming in March, it almost makes me want to move south! Here in CT, all we have is flattened crocuses (it's been raining for 4 days - over 4" of rain so far). Thanks for sharing all the bright colors of your garden!

Hi Kimberly,

Wonderful photos and so much to see! I’m unsure whether having flowers all year round makes you appreciate Spring more or less…

Nah, I think everyone will always appreciate Spring regardless :)

You have so much blooming! I bet your citrus trees smell like heaven now. I've been seeing the Mother of 1000's on a few blogs lately, it looks like a really pretty plant.
