Asexual Lipstick

Admittedly, not everyone is interested in lipstick, let alone the latest colors this season has to offer.  Aside from the various manufacturers, one must decide between the diverse finishes as well...shiney, sparkley, matte, long lasting, dry, moist, etc.  Then, of course, there's the application...a thick crayon shaped stick to a thin wand or brush. Let's not mention the multitude of lip balm, gloss and liner.  It's really overwhelming.

However, there IS a lipstick that can be appreciated by all...the lovely Lipstick Plant or Aeschynanthus radicans.

This plant features beautiful tube-shaped bright red - orange blooms
that hang from graceful stems and arching foliage.

HOLD THE PHONE!
(ps - one of my favorite movie quotes EVER...can you guess the movie?)
The lipstick plant is an EPIPHYTE!!!!...
or a plant that lives in the trees obtaining nutrients from fallen leaves and twigs
that get caught in the crevices of branches.

It's apparently native to Malaysia and prefers plenty of indirect light.
My friend, Africanaussie wrote about her lipstick plant,
"Aeschynanthus radicans 'Crispa'" in her post titled,
Can Anyone Grow a Lipstick Plant?

But on a REALLY fun note, here's some songs with lipstick in the lyrics...
Lipstick by Elise Estrada
Hit Me with Your Best Shot by Pat Benetar
(she puts another notch in her lipstick case)
Red Lipstick by Kesha
Lipstick on Your Collar by Connie Francis and remade by The Saints in 1977
Lipstick Lies by Pat Benetar in 1977 and remade by Saving Alexis in 2010
Lipstick on the Radio by Neal McCoy
Lipstick and Bruises by Atomic

Can you think of any?

Wow, that plant looks too lush to be an epiphyte! I'm impressed! Personally, a moist and long lasting gal myself...I've learned as we age that sparkles and shimmers aren't always so kind LOL :P

I can't grow one, but it is quite lovely! I like the foliage, as well as the flowers. I just listened to Kesha's Red Lipstick song...fun, catchy tune, but if she's not careful, she'll catch something she doesn't want!

Funny that you should mention both Kesha and epiphytes in this post. I've just been informed by some 7th graders I tutor that Kesha is THE coolest person around. And "epiphyte" seems to have become a popular metaphor for all kinds of things these days, making me smugly proud that as a gardener I know what it really means. Love your post! I can't think of any other lipstick songs, but the one from Connie Francis is one of my all-time favorites, especially as theme song of the wonderful same-named British TV series.

Haha! I think you've got the lipstick songs covered (at least from my memory). I don't think I've ever seen this plant around my parts, but I like it!

Clare - I was impressed too when I learned of the epiphyte factoid...although I'll keep mine in a pot as they are sensitive to cold. I understand about the sparkles and shimmers...can't do it!

Deb - it's actually a really easy houseplant so you might be able to enjoy it if you're interested. Re. Kesha...well, she's certainly not on my favorite artist list but she's pretty hot right now...and I can only hope she's more conservative in person than in her music.

Barbara - yes, Kesha is "the thing" right now among the kids...great role model! :< And epiphytes are extrememly popular, at least in MY world! I couldn't find any more lipstick songs either...I even googled it. However, there were a few that I chose not to include - too crass for my liking.

Sandy - I remember selling my Pat Benetar collection for my spring break fund back in our college days! It was painful but worth the sale. :)
