Succulent Salon

Succulent succulents.  I think that says it all!!

No names.

Although this one reminds me of coral in the ocean.

This one reminds me of those tubular sponges waving back and forth with the current.

These two compliment each other beautifully.

These little rosettes like to sprawl and will soon hang over the lip of their pot.

My daughter potted this combo - quite lovely, I think.

This one has already found its way over the edge of its pot.
I love the variegated little stars complimented by their sweet white blooms.

When I was given these lovely little succulents, I thought this pot the perfect new home.  However, they are all growing so quickly that I may need to find a new residence sooner than anticipated.

These pencil cactus rank in my favorites list.
I was given the smaller one at the bottom of the photo
that has doubled its size in just a few short months.
The two larger ones,
supported by a bed head board for the time being,
were found in a garbage pile.
Lucky day!

This Zig Zag cactus was also a cherished gift
and tops my favorites list.
It has tripled its size!!!

This singular cactus was brought from my previous garden.
I worried that it felt lonely and wasn't thriving.

I was wrong.
She was working diligently to produce her first bloom!
I can't wait to see it!!!

This, sadly, is the sight of a cactus grave.  It showed no hope.
But if you look closely...

Never give up on a suculent!

This little pot of pricklies was given to me by a woman having an estate sale.
The pot was waterlogged and the cactus looked beyond hope.
It's recovering nicely and will be fine.

On a completely different note, our hen, Cameron, is not a "Cami" at all, but rather a "Cam" instead.  Yes, Cameron belted out his first crow, proudly announcing his misidentified gender.

Indeed he had shown protective behaviors over the other two hens and displayed his tail feathers like a peacock.  He is larger than the girls, and commands respect.  We are still waiting patiently for the ladies to produce eggs, but seeing that Cameron is going through puberty and finding his voice, I imagine it won't be much longer!

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!!!

You have a wonderful collection of succulents. It's funny but I don't think of cactus as being succulents, guess I better change my thinking.

Thanks for sharing and have a nice holiday tomorrow.

Succulents are starting to grow on me. Many here have to be kept indoors over winter, but there is so much variety of color, form and texture. You have a nice collection, Kimberly.

Succulents are tougher than it seems. My Dad had one for years and years, never any pampering, never bringing it inside. I was amazed! I bet Cam is happy you're not calling him Cami anymore!

I am never quite sure about cactus, but that is a lovely arrangement your daughter put together. I can just imagine nemo swimming through them! Talking of that I wonder what they would look like in a big glass bowl

Those are some wild looking plants!! When I first started reading your post, I thought you were writing from a tropical country. Oh wait, compared to the uptight, coffee-fueled suburbs of DC, you are a different country. Happy gardening! :o)

Kimberly, those little darlings are definitely odd looking. (Not the rooster. He's very cute.) We used to have a cactus growing next to our pool deck when we first moved to Florida. Believe me, we didn't plant it. A very stupid location for a plant that impales feet with sharp hair-like needles that can't be found to remove. Yours are so cute - and not next to a pool.

Your succulents are so appropriately planted with the seashells surrounding them. They look like coral formations under the sea. I have a pencil cactus in a pot on the back porch and just recently cut it in half as it was hitting the ceiling. I potted up the top half for my daughter to have on her back porch. They are so interesting looking aren't they? I have a neighbor who has a hedge of them planted that looks fabulous.

You have a very nice collection! The first plant is Echeveria nodulosa. It has a tendency to get a little leggy no matter what you do, but you can cut and reroot the top when they get too long.

Fun to see some succulents growing in Florida! They look happy.

After reading my post, I realized I left out quite a few succulents that adorn my property. I'll save them for another day. Admittedly, I never thought of succulents or cacti in Florida, but many of them thrive, even with the rain and humidity. And they grow to huge proportions, which is really cool!

FL, regarding succulents and cacti, I've read that all cacti are succulents but not all succulents are cacti. Not being an expert on the subject, I've decided to accept this internet factoid.

Kay, I first saw the pencil cactus growing outside like a tree...thus my infatuation with them began. Since, I've seen them on pots on a dining dock of a favorite restaurant and they are amazingly beautiful, weirdly tropical, exotic and ecclectic. What's not to love about that? I'm glad you are able to share with your daughter. Great pass-along!

HB, thank you so much for the ID on the first. I'll make note of it. Everytime I try to check out a succulent book from the library, they're checked out.

Sherry, I agree that poolside is not the ideal location for anything with spines and pricles. What were the previous homeowners thinking?!?!

CM, yes, South Florida is MUCH more laid back than the fast-paced world of DC!!! :D

AA, so glad to hear from you! I like your idea of a glass bowl container. I think it would be very attractive and interesting!

HG - Cam is such a good rooster, and thrilled we stopped calling him Cami! We're taking extra time to hold him and coddle him a bit so he'll be kind once he matures into a full-grown protective male.

Oh! Cock-a-doodle roo! We had one of those moments with our chicks last year when Siegfried turned out not to be Frida after all ;) Will you get to keep him, or does your city have a ordinance against roosters? He's very handsome, and I actually now love the sound of rooster around here (even one that doesn't crow very well).

I love your promising little cactus bloom, and your tiny cactus emerging from the grave. Alas, I've drowned many a cactus due to over watering, but now I wonder if I'd waited....

Hey Kimberly...Succulents are so fun and really perfect for containers in a Florida summer. You've got a nice selection to enjoy. In case you don't read Florida Gardening magazine...I did a short article on "Florida-Friendly Internet Resources" and included a blurb and a link for your blog so others can enjoy it, too. :-)

Well...hellloooooo Cameron!

Lovely bunch of succulents you have there!

Susan, I am sooo flattered to be included in your article! Thank you!! You are, by far, the best resource for Floridian Bloggers, in addition to your fantastic Florida Friendly plant lists!! I'm also excited to hear about this magazine...I've not seen it before but will now become a regular subscriber. Very exciting!!

Clare, so know by personal experience the surprise we experienced when we learned of Cameron's true gender. CRAZY!!! Since her breed is naturally more aggressive and unquestionable leaders, I didn't question her rooster-like, protective behaviors. But the defining moment leaves no room for questions. He's not too loud or obnoxious so hopefully he'll stay that way.

Linda, we're hoping our neighbors continue to be friends with us! :D

Oh yes they are beautiful, and they are easy because they thrive on neglect, the plants most difficult to kill! And your chickens are lovely too, 2 weeks ago i amputated a chick whose leg was crushed by a monitor lizard, but we managed to save it. Now it survived with only a leg, so pitiful jumping with a leg only, a survivor!

I enjoy succulents alot. Thank you for sharing the photos of all the different varities.

And on top of that you have chickens. I've always wanted chickens in a nice little chicken coop.

Great pictures!

Kimberly your succulents are looking awesome. What a lucky find for you to get that pencil plant out of the garbage. Who would do that! LOL I love your zig zag cactus. I am on the lookout for one. And yes don't give up on a succulent until you are absolutely sure its dead!

Can't wait to see more like you said! Take care!
