This is what I want my entry and garden paths to say to everyone as they enter, pass through, and meander about. Hopefully I am achieving this goal as the landscape changes and takes shape. I'm pleased with the front entry to date. Initially nonexistent...
The day we moved in, December 2010
...the entry, or lack of, was completely undefined
and left visitors wondering which way to go.
We created a pathway that fit our style and that of the surrounding landscape.
The rustic steps match the home and organic feel of the property.
Informal structure, if you will.
We cut out garden space surrounding the steps
to add interest and soften the edges.
Since this area receives dappled sun throughout the day,
I wanted to brighten the space with year-round color.
I decided on low maintenance variegated Liriope.
Stromanthe sanguinea adds color as it alternates with the Liriope.
The dappled light displays the colors nicely without overwhelming.
Copperleaf, or Acalypha godseffiana,
was added to the top of the path on both sides
to accentuate the actual entrance of our home.
The bright colors and oddly shaped leaves create
additional interest and an airy, zen feeling.
Queen Emma Crinum Lily was added at the base
of an existing Slash Pine tree to add balance and beauty.
The finished entry as it looks today.
The view from the front patio is beautiful and peaceful
as the morning light dances about the garden.
Stay tuned as more spaces take shape and mature into places of peace and tranquility.

Such a vast improvement. I love your planting choices. The variegated Liriope is fabulous paired with the gorgeous Stromanthe. Copperleaf Acalypha is a common sight here too, and deserves a spot in every garden. It is just fantastic with its pink and green colours. The Queen Emma is a brilliant touch as well, under the cover of the Pine Tree. You've definitely created a lovely and welcoming entrance.
that looks lovley - I had a pathway lined with liriope when I lived in Jacksonville and just loved it. The varieged one paired with stromanthe is a great choice.
That is a great design for the front steps. It looks very inviting. Thank you for sharing.
Kimberly: That is a real nice design of your pathway! I love the tranquility it provides.
That's an amazing improvement! I love your Copperleaf. I've tried to grow it up here in northwest Florida but it just doesn't seem to take. Could be the zone or it could be my lack of a green thumb
Your entryway definitely looks very inviting and has a nice color scheme going on. I especially like the stepping stones located a stone throw from the front door.
I love your steps. The previous owners tried, and failed, to put some in that are similar, but only with the wood at the front, so all the gravel spilled out the sides! Someday I'd like to get them fixed, as it's the only way up one of our step slopes. They look so much better when they're done right!
Your entry looks great. I am very envious of your Queen Emma crinum. I have a couple of crinums that I picked up at a market a few years back, but the Queen Emma seems to be far and away the most spectacular.
I absolutely agree on the excitement of creating garden spaces. Hahaha... I always feel steps taking you somewhere create a different mood to your garden. I have just one up going out of my pergolga space but it completely changes the feel in my garden there.
I'm creating a space around a new wildlife pond build where I'm trying to make the Arbour seat nearby welcoming you to sit with newly built small grass mounds on either side creating a space that makes you feel you are in the country - that's the plan any away.
Delighted to see Liriope in your planting – I think that’s a plant I was thinking about getting. Thanks for adding my blog in your blog list too – wishing you a great weekend :-)
thank you for sharing
