Fungus Among Us

Florida's rainy season creates a prime environment for all types of fungus and mold.  Most of the time I don't notice them, but lately the mushrooms have been popping up all over my yard.  I don't study them, nor do I know their names, but I must admit that they are fascinating.  This is what caught my eye one afternoon.  From afar it looked similar to a piece of foam stuck between a cinder block and a tree trunk.

Upon closer inspection, I discovered a mushroom.
Interesting.

Nearby, I spotted this prime specimen shining in the sun.
I like the combination of the red leathery top and yellow body.
It looks like the thick, meaty type that cook up well with some balsamic vinegar.
I'm certainly not brave enough to try eating it, though.

And still another one within a few feet.
Curious that the cap seems to grow around the blade of grass.

If I hadn't been on a hunt for more, I would have missed this gnarly looking shroom as it blends so well with its surroundings. This one prefers prime waterfront real estate on the bank of the pond.

But not all mushrooms are as robust.  This one boasts a slight, dainty appearance.

Although the color is similar to the last one, this white mushroom possesses
a smooth cap and much thicker trunk.

This colony of fungi prefer to stick together rather than stand alone.

The cap on this one is bowl shaped instead of the usual umbrella form.

This cap waves around like a roller coaster track.

I'm not sure if this one is simply growing alongside the tree trunk or growing out of the trunk.

The underside is intriguing.  It resembles a filter.

These attractive button shrooms remind me of a happy little family.

Perfectly shaped!  I wonder if a fairy lives here?

Not all fungi is attractive, though.  I posted about this Wolf's Mile Slime Mold
earlier this year in my "Lola is Home" post on 4/22/12.

Gross and slimy!

And some fungus exude a very nasty odor like this Stinkhorn
I blogged about on March 9, 2010

It's really disgusting, but I can't help myself from looking at it and poking around.

With the exception of the last two,
these photos were all taken in my yard on the same day.
That's a lot of fungus among us!

And since the topic is fungus,
I'll add one of my favorite pics of my son taken a couple of years ago...

What a Fun Guy!!!
