My friend, Joy, at GardenJoy4Me recently published a post titled, “When Awesome is Truly AWESOME”. She discussed how the word “awesome” is very much overused, but she wanted to use it because there was no better descriptive. In Joy’s case, her use of the word was completely acceptable. However, this caused me to consider my own vocabulary, as I tend to overuse quite a few adjectives and exclamations (such as the word "use" in this paragraph). I thought of the comments I’d left for bloggers after reading their “Awesome” posts and viewing their “Amazing” photos. Hmmmm!
So, I stand before you admitting my guilt. I am largely at fault for exploiting expressions, using worn-out words, writing excessive exclamations and expressing redundant remarks. I’m even guilty for using entirely too many exclamation points!!!! See what I mean?!In my own defense, I AM a typically happy, enthusiastic person and DO become easily excited about gardens and gardening successes. I study the detail in blogger’s photography, soaking in the features of each flower, garden scene, landscape picture, instructional series and even family clips. I read and reread the words of the eloquent writers who put so much work into their prose. And I actually, physically, laugh out loud when those with the great gift of humor share it in their blogs through so many various avenues.
With that said, and considering my allotted time for blogging (that seems to dwindle on a weekly basis), I tend to rush through my comments. I feel the need to express my excitement and enjoyment to the author but have little time to do so. I mean, so many blogs…so little time!! Thus, I am a habitual user of worn-out words.

There are a tremendous number of alternatives. I know because I actually completed the exercise of checking the thesaurus for appropriate synonyms. For those of you who may suffer as I, I’ve listed some acceptable remarks:
Splendid, breathtaking, astounding, GRAND, treMENdous, remarkable, AWE-inspiring, humbling, WoNdErFuL, marvelous, mind-blowing, staggering, SUPERB, BRILLIANT, spectacular, out of this world, stunning, striking, dazzling, dramatic and impressive.
I’m sure there are more, but this list provides a good number of alternatives.

May our words be as varied as our flowers!

It's funny how some words get overused...the reason I have so much respect for 'awesome' is because it's survived as a go-to word for decades. It hasn't fallen by the cultural wayside like 'groovy', 'nifty', 'rad', and 'tubular'. I will not apologize for my overuse of 'awesome' ! :D
And when I see someone using fancier words to describe something simple, I wonder if they're reaching a bit lol.
Great post. I love words.
Kyna, I like your point of view!
You're plantastic, Kimberly! And awesome is well, awesome. Sometimes I think "1984 called, and wants its adjective back," but hey, it's still here for a reason.
I think what is most appealing when reading others blogs is the natural flow of their language. If it includes awesome and fabulous rather than being forced and wordy then who cares. I too am an enthusiastic blogger who definitely over uses words and !!!!!!! I just have to roll with it. I can't help myself!! See, there I did it again!! Oops and again!
Dear Kimberly, Wow! This is an awesome posting! I love it, not least because it is such a fantastic idea to write about something other than beautiful plants and gorgeous gardens. I am sure that you will get an unbelievable, if not incredible, response to this.
Seriously, do not change - we love you as you are.
Liza, thank you. You are TRULY AWESOME, in the best sense of the word!
UDG, agreed. The natural flow is best. However, grabbing a word out of my pocket when an author has gone to such great strides to provide a pleasurable post is my weakness. I will try hard not to reply, "WOW!!!!!" on every post. BUT...if "WOW!!!!!" is the correct response, it cannot be helped. Like you, I cannot, nor do I want to, curb my enthusiasm.
Edith, my friend, you crack me up!!! (uh oh...too many exclamation points...this is harder than I thought)
I agree with your contention we are all guilty of overusing the same adjectives. So being from the South I can only say your post was finer than a frogs hair split four ways :]
Oh Kimberly,
You have inspired me! This is something that I am guilty of and so I am resolved to correct my predisposition to using the same word choices over and over again....until I fall off the wagon and start to use my favorite expressive words again :-)
This post is BEAST, man!
LOL...Thanks for some "new" words I can use in my comments. I'm in desperate need of them. You're posts is funny and interesting as usual.
So funny and so true. Since becoming a blogger I have noticed an increase in my use of :) and !. It's just inevitable that one of them is going to show up.
Kimberly ~ You sure have hit home with a lot of us bloggers. It is so hard to say how we feel, or perceive things, without using words that are over used at times. I love the way you express yourself.

What an awesome post! ;) I feel the same way as the other commenters. But you have shoved me in the direction of a thesaurus.I just need to remember to use it.....
Guilty too! Uh oh, there's an exclamation mark already. That being said I don't think bloggers mind about commenters overusing words-we all do it-it is the comment that is very nice because someone took the time to say hey. This is a very well written post and quite fun too. Have a great weekend P.S. (Great is my word;)
What a fun post Kimberly! WE are all guilty of redundancy. You have found some grand alternatives however. I always appreciate readers intent in wanting to offer support and share their unique perception of a post. Writing even comments can be a good exercise so thanks for the reminder to be more creative. ;>)
