Kimberly - THIS is exactly why I admire you and fellow tropical gardeners; big bright bugs freak the bejeebers out of me (and yes, "bejeebers" is a technical term, meaning 'heart stopping').
I was just visiting FL last week ('Girls get-away') and in my recent post, recommended readers check out your blog for reference in FL gardening. (Hope you don't mind?) :D -Shyrlene
Dear Kimberly, Indeed, no words are necessary. How right you are! I should even go so far as to say that no picture is necessary. Happily such little creatures are not, as far as I am aware, to be found within the confines of Maida Vale!
This is my favorite spider! The zig-zag writing spider (Argiope aurantia) holds special memories for me as child. I always look for their return each year after winter. Gotta love their webs, and they are great predators. Also, I think they are the prettiest spider in the world.
I think that if I had come upon this beautiful spider unexpectedly, I might have screamed. But, knowing it was there ahead of time I would take the time to enjoy it's beauty from a distance ;-)

THAT. FRIGGIN. RULES.
Oh, I love those orb weaver spiders! When I'm hiking and the mosquitoes are after me I think of them as guardian angels watching over me.
I don't mind spiders as long as they're outside and not it.
Spiders are our friends in the garden. They help keep many of the harmful insects at bay. That said, I don't like it when I get them in my hair.
That is a beautiful spider. i like spiders as long as they are in their own world and not inside my house!
Oh dear Lord. That does not look like any orb weaver I've ever seen. That thing you could rope and ride.
I love it! It looks like the one I had outside my window a few years ago. I blogged about it last summer, it was eating crickets.

I love finding large garden spiders. This one is very handsome!
